Matviyenko calls for reviewing method of charting Arctic territories
Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matviyenko has suggested reviewing the methodology devised by the Ministry of Economic Development to determine which territories belong to the Arctic region, TASS reported.
Speaking at a joint session of the Presidium of the Council on the Arctic and Antarctic under the Federation Council and the State Commission for Arctic Development, Valentina Matviyenko stressed that according to this methodology, some territories north of the Arctic Circle are not considered part of the Arctic zone.
"The Arctic Circle, it would seem, should be the only methodology for placing a territory within the Arctic zone," she said.
The senator suggested giving instructions to the Economy Ministry to review its methodology of classifying territories as part of the Arctic zone in order to make it objective, transparent and understandable for all Russian regions.
