Northern Fleet hydrographers discover an island off Novaya Zemlya

The Northern Fleet's Senezh expedition and vessel crew has completed oceanographic research off the northern island of the Novaya Zemlya Archipelago. They discovered an island near Chayev Glacier, Acting Head of the Northern Fleet's press service, Captain 2nd Class Andrei Luzik announced.

"In the course of the research, new geographic features were found at Severny Island, features that were formed after the destruction of the glaciers. More specifically, a new island was found near Chayev Glacier," Luzik noted.

At present, the Senezh, a hydrographic survey ship, is continuing its oceanographic research plan in the Barents Sea. In late August, the vessel left the base, crossed the Northern Sea Route and proceeded eastward to the New Siberian Islands in the Laptev Sea. It then sailed back to Novaya Zemlya along the ice rim.

According to Luzik, the Senezh explored one more region of white spots in the Kara Sea in September and conducted a number of research activities in the Laptev Sea.
