Arctic helicopter starts flight trials

The Russian Helicopters holding has started flight trials of a new military transport helicopter, Mi-8AMTSh-VA, designed for Arctic operations, Interfax reported citing the company press service.

"Flight trials will include tests to ensure that the helicopter's specifications comply with the technical requirements set by the contracting authority — the Defense Ministry," the press service said.

The helicopter was developed especially for flights at low temperatures. Its onboard equipment is adapted to Arctic conditions. The helicopter is designed to provide airlift and airdrop support for Arctic forces and monitor designated areas of responsibility. Furthermore, it can be used in search and rescue operations for ships and aircraft in distress along the Northern Sea Route.
