Komi Governor: Belkomur railway is very important for Arctic regions

The construction of the Belkomur railway line from the White Sea to the Urals via the Republic of Komi is now underway, Komi Governor Vyacheslav Gaizer said during the fifth international meeting of the Arctic Council members.

"The preparation stage for the Belkomur project has been completed, including pre-project expert evaluation, the estimated supply turnover, and the project's economic model. The project is now well underway," Gaizer said.

He recalled that a Russian-Chinese agreement on the joint implementation of the Belkomur project was signed on September 3, during President Vladimir Putin's visit to Beijing.

Gaizer said that Belkomur is one of the most important projects in the Arkhangelsk and Murmansk regions, the Komi Republic and the Perm Territory.

Belkomur is a project to build a 1,161 km railway line from Solikamsk to Arkhangelsk via Syktyvkar, a shorter route for delivering freight from Western Siberia and the Urals to the ports of Arkhangelsk, Murmansk and St. Petersburg.
