Igor Orlov: Comprehensive Arctic medical center to be set up in Arkhangelsk

There are plans to establish a comprehensive Arctic medical center at Northern State Medical University in Arkhangelsk, Acting Governor of the Arkhangelsk Region Igor Orlov said at an international conference titled Ensuring Safety and Sustainable Development in the Arctic Region, Preservation of Ecosystems and Traditional Way of Life of the Indigenous Peoples of the North.

The conference was held in Arkhangelsk as part of the fifth international meeting of the Arctic Council member countries, observer states and international academic community representatives.

"We plan to establish a center for comprehensive medical studies in the Arctic at the Northern State Medical University that will assess health risks to the indigenous people, polar researchers, military personnel and rotational teams in the Arctic," Orlov said.

The acting governor also said that Arctic development calls for specialized training of medical personnel, including through distance learning, and the provision of telehealth services.
