Russian Defense Ministry to focus on military infrastructure development in the Arctic

In 2016-2020, the Russian Ministry of Defense will focus on the development of military infrastructure in the Arctic region and on the Kuril Islands, RIA Novosti quoted Defense Minister, Army General Sergei Shoigu as saying.

"The first thing for us is the development of the military infrastructure in the Arctic region and the Kuril Islands, as well as the reconstruction of the operations command post for the Eastern Military District," Shoigu said at a meeting of the Defense Ministry board.

The minister also said that work is underway to сconstruct facilities for the Arctic units. Over 9,500 metric tons of construction materials and equipment were delivered to Wrangel Island and Cape Schmidt in 2015.
