Russia to oppose confrontation in the Arctic

Russia will oppose all attempts at confrontation and military standoff in the Arctic, according to the recently published Russian Foreign Policy Concept.

"Russia will firmly oppose any and all attempts to bring elements of confrontation and military standoff to the Arctic, and to politicize international cooperation in the region on the whole," the concept reads.

The document stresses that Russia considers the existing international treaties and legal framework to be sufficient for resolving all issues arising in the Arctic, including determining the external boundaries of the continental shelf in the Arctic Ocean.

The Foreign Policy Concept of the Russian Federation was approved by  a presidential executive order on November 30, 2016.
