Nenets Autonomous Area marks Reindeer Day

The Nenets Autonomous Area has marked Reindeer Day, a professional festival of reindeer breeders timed to coincide with the end of the summer pasturing season when the herds begin migrating to the winter grazing land, the Nenets Information Agency — 24 reports. The festival has been marked on the first Sunday in August since 1932.

During the festivities, agricultural cooperatives and indigenous communities of the Nenets Autonomous Area arrange performances by concert teams and competitions in national sports. In addition, the best employees and veterans of reindeer farms are presented with awards. In 2015, the area's authorities have allocated 1.3 million rubles to award the best farms and reindeer breeders.

Reindeer breeding is a traditional occupation of the Nenets and Komi living in the Nenets Autonomous Area. The area's reindeer herd, consisting of 186,000 heads, is the third largest in Russia after Yamal and Yakutia.
