Indigenous people support fund to be established in Russia

Russia plans to establish a fund to support the indigenous people of the North. In particular, the fund would compensate any possible environmental damage from development in the Arctic, Nikolai Patrushev, Secretary of the Russian Security Council, told journalists after the fifth International Conference on Security and Sustainable Development of the Arctic in Arkhangelsk.

"The fund would be based on the experience of the large corporations that are working in the region," Patrushev said.

Nikolai Patrushev added that the Indigenous People Support Fund would be created on instructions from President Vladimir Putin and that they have been working on the mechanisms for this fund. In particular, the Presidium of Russia's State Council and the Presidential Council for Interethnic Relations are preparing a meeting of the State Council Presidium that will address this issue.
