Fishermen belonging to Nenets Autonomous Area indigenous minorities to receive fishing sites

The administration of the Nenets Autonomous Area has announced a contest for the right to sign contracts on providing the following sites for traditional fishing to representatives of Nenets indigenous minorities: Peschanka River, Roman-Yakha, Yareyu and Sibirchata-Yakha.

Applications will be accepted separately for each site until 10 am on May 16, according to the local government services portal. Everyone can apply for all four sites.

According to the contest documentation, the fishing sites will be provided to Nenets indigenous minorities for fishing in order to uphold their traditional way of life and traditional economic activities. People involved in traditional fishing will be able to catch any fish species there except for salmon and pink salmon. Fishing quotas for these varieties are determined separately by the special district commission.

The most important criteria for the selection of contest participants are the number of people in the community, its location in relation to a fishing site and the volume of aquatic bioresources caught over the last four years. The community that receives the most points will enter into a contract for the use of a fishing site for 10 years.

If the site is not used for its intended purpose within two years, the contract shall be terminated unilaterally, according to the relevant local department.
