Murmansk to host international Svalbard research conference

The 13th international conference Integrated Studies of Spitsbergen Nature and Offshore will be held in Murmansk on November 2-3, the Murmansk government's Media Relations Department said.  

"The conference will be attended by over 100 researchers from the leading Russian natural science institutions that conduct Arctic research plus foreign colleagues from the University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS)," the statement says.

The event includes discussions on nature in the Arctic, the dynamics of climate change, Arctic ecosystems and environmental resource potential, biodiversity, the productivity of Arctic ecosystems, glacier dynamics and much more.

The agenda includes a working meeting of the Scientific Council of the Russian Research Centre on Svalbard, where participants will discuss the council's performance, the research program for 2017, and the prospects for Russian research and expedition projects on the archipelago.

The conference was organized by the Murmansk Marine Biological Institute, the Federal Agency for Scientific Organizations, coal mining company Arcticugol, the Murmansk Branch of the Russian Geographical Society, and the Murmansk Region Association of Polar Researchers.
