Reindeer Herders’ Day celebration gets underway in Yamal

Celebrations of Reindeer Herders' Day in the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Area will begin on February 18 in the Purovsky District and will last for more than two months, the government of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Area said in a statement released on its official website. The Kar-Nat trading station will host individual and team competitions in local sports, including reindeer racing.

Reindeer Herders' Day will be celebrated in Salekhard, Yamal's capital, on March 25. The program features competitions in local sports disciplines, such as reindeer racing and snowmobile races, as well as performances by local bands and a fair. Reindeer skin tents will be on display so that festivalgoers can get some rest, take pictures and have a cup of hot tea.

The 22nd Open Governor's Cup Competitions of Reindeer Herders will be held in Nadym on March 4 and 5. Apart from competitions in various disciplines, a local craft fair will operate during the event, and guided tours will be offered alongside performances by folk bands and ethnological exhibitions. The Nomad Family district contest will be open not only to Yamal residents, but also to nomadic families from the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Area.

On March 18-19, Novy Urengoy will host the Northern People's Festival, during which a fair and celebration will be organized on the square near Molodyozhnoye Lake, including rides on reindeer sleighs and snowmobiles, sports games, local sports competitions and ski races. Reindeer meat, northern fish and berries will be on sale during the event.

The village of Yar-Sal will hold a district beauty pageant among local women in order to raise awareness of the talent and skills of women living in reindeer skin tents. The purpose of the contest is to preserve the traditions and cultural heritage of the district's indigenous people in the run-up to the conference of reindeer herders scheduled to take place on April 2. The contest will award the most skillful young woman, best singer, best cook, best craft maker and best actress.

In Aksarka, the district center in Cisurals, Reindeer Herders' Day will be celebrated on March 31 — April 1. Apart from the traditional program, reindeer farmers and their families will be able to pass the Ready for Labor and Defense fitness test by taking part in sprint, long-distance and cross-country races, performing long and high jumps, shot put, pull ups, skiing, etc.

The Reindeer Herders' Day celebrations will come to an end on April 19-20 with festivities in the village of Gyda (Tazovsky District).
