Reindeer Herders’ Day to be celebrated on Taimyr

The Reindeer Herders' Day will be celebrated on Taimyr on April 7-23 this year, according to the Taimyr Dolgano-Nenets municipal district website.

"Sport competitions, exhibits of applied art and ethnic cuisine, a demonstration of ethnic clothes sewn by local tailors, folk festivities, snowmobile and reindeer racing will be on the agenda," the website said.

The festivities will open on April 7 in the village of Potapovo in the Dudinka settlement. On April 8, the celebrations will move on to the Karaul settlement, with the main events unfolding in Tukhard village. Reindeer herders will be celebrated in the village of Khatanga on April 14, and folk entertainment in the village of Nosok in the Karaul settlement will be held on April 15.

Large celebrations will be organised on April 15 in the village of Popigai, the center of the Khatanga settlement. Here reindeer herders from Taimyr and Yakutia will be competing in a reindeer sleigh race. The celebrations will round off on April 23 in the villages of Syndassko and Novorybnaya.

During this period, people from the tundra and local villagers will be able to undergo medical examination.

Reindeer Herders' Day is held to preserve and develop nomadic reindeer breeding, and promote the traditional crafts and cultural traditions of the indigenous Taimyr people.
