First conference of indigenous - language teachers to take place in St. Petersburg

The first national conference of teachers of Northern, Siberian and Far Eastern indigenous languages, literature and culture will start on November 20 at the Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia in St. Petersburg, with 350 teachers from 30 regions taking part in it, TASS reports. They will discuss the issues of updating the course content and teaching methods for the native languages, literature and culture of small indigenous peoples of the North, Siberia and the Far East.

It is planned that an association of teachers of indigenous languages will be established at the conference.

"The goal of the first national conference is to promote updating the course content and teaching methods concerning the native languages, literature and culture of Northern, Siberian and Far Eastern small indigenous peoples. The conference will attract 350 teachers from 30 regions and will conclude on November 21 with a foundational meeting of an association of teachers of Northern, Siberian and Far Eastern indigenous languages, literature and culture," a spokesperson at the press service said.

The event is organized by the Russian Ministry of Education and Science, the Russian Association of Indigenous Peoples of the North (RAIPON), the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), the Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia and the Research Institute of Ethnic Schools of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia).
