Each year, the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Area operates a network of winter roads that only function in subzero temperatures. In 2016, workers started building a route that will link Salekhard with Labytnangi via the ice-covered Ob River. And two other winter roads are to link Salekhard with Nadym and Urengoi with Krasnoselkup. The region’s general purpose roads total about 1,224 kilometers in length, compared to 930 kilometers of winter roads which play such a significant role in making certain locations accessible.
