Arctic Floating University experts to study Novaya Zemlya in 2016

This year, professors and students at the Arctic Floating University, a research expedition at Northern (Arctic) Federal University, are planning to study the Novaya Zemlya archipelago and the Vaigach and Kolguyev islands, Konstantin Zaikov, Director of the Arctic Center for Strategic Research at Northern (Arctic) Federal University, told TASS.

"Most of the expedition's research projects will be implemented on the Novaya Zemlya archipelago or on nearby islands, primarily the islands of Kolguyev and Vaigach," Zaikov said.

According to Zaikov, the expedition onboard the Professor Molchanov research ship will take place from June 7 through June 27 and involve 58 people, including 30 students. "This year's expedition will be international. Since 2014, we've invited foreign students, researchers and teaching staff to take part. This year, about 10 foreigners from different parts of the world will join the expedition," he said. There will be participants from Indonesia, Brazil and Germany.

The Arctic Floating University that sailed on its first voyage in 2012 is an educational project aiming to expand Russia's research activities in the region and train experts for high-latitude research.
