Russia’s major environment cleanup to take ten years

The major cleanup of the Russian environment will take about ten years, according to Sergei Ivanov, Special Presidential Representative for Environmental Protection, Ecology and Transport. Ivanov was interviewed by Rossiya-24 television channel. The operation is now underway in the Arctic region.

"I give it about ten years. The cleanup is already under way in the Arctic," Ivanov said when asked how much time it may take to clean the environment in the country.

For several years, Russia has been actively involved in removing waste accumulated during the exploration of the Arctic. The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment estimates that this year some 10,000 tons of waste will be removed.

Special programs have been developed in recent years, including the cleaning effort on Franz Josef Land. The program is expected to be completed by 2025.
