Investment in Yamal Arctic environmental clean-up estimated at 120 million roubles

Extra-budgetary investment in cleaning up the Yamal Arctic region is estimated at 120 million roubles, the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous District (YNAO) website reported. The estimate does not take into account the cost of work to clean up Vilkitsky Island.

"Extra-budgetary financial investment in environmental clean-up of the Yamal Arctic (in particular, Bely Island), is estimated at 120 million roubles," the site said. "This does not include the equipment provided for free by our partner companies. Estimates are still being made for the cost of work on Vilkitsky Island."

Earlier, Gazprom Neft confirmed the company's intention to support the general clean-up effort on Vilkitsky Island. The first group of volunteer workers will arrive on the island in mid-July. Vilkitsky Island will be the second Arctic island in the YNAA where clean-up efforts will eliminate the accumulated damage caused by previous human activity in the area. Volunteers from around the world are supporting the environmental project, which is receiving support from the region's biggest partners — Russian energy sector companies.

The first environmental expedition, to Bely Island, took place in 2012.
