Northern Fleet hydrographers to survey Franz Josef Land

Specialists from the Northern Fleet's hydrographic service have arrived at the Franz Josef Land archipelago on board the Senezh to conduct oceanographic surveys, Interfax reports, citing NF press service chief Capt. 1st Rank Vadim Serga.

"On their arrival to the archipelago islands, the specialists of the Northern Fleet's hydrographic service plan to continue surveying the unexplored regions, correcting navigation maps and pilot charts and inspecting control survey points and their connections," Capt. Serga said, adding that the surveys will be conducted with the use of new technical means.

"Surveying the archipelago is a scientific priority for the Northern Fleet's hydrographic service," he said.

The Senezh expedition is the Northern Fleet's second voyage to the Franz Josef Land archipelago. The first expedition (September 2013) surveyed so-called white spots on the map. Among other things, the hydrographers discovered a strait that splits Northbrook Island in two as well as significant changes in navigation at the Franz Josef Land archipelago.
