Murmansk hosts 6th Russian Marine Research Conference

The 6th All-Russian Marine Research Conference, The Arctic 2015, which is underway aboard the sailing ship Sedov that is anchored in Murmansk, is focused on the Northern Sea Route for the development of Arctic communications as part of the global economy, the Arctic-Info news agency reported.

Murmansk Region Governor Marina Kovtun said the conference highlighted the revival of Russia's interest in the northern regions.

"Arctic development is a key goal of the general strategy for using the country's potential. It is a powerful resource that we must use in international competition without fail," Ms Kovtun said in her opening remarks at the conference.

The conference programme includes six panel discussions: Development of the Northern Sea Route in the 20th and 21st centuries, The Russian Navy Arctic group and the FSB Border Guard Service for national security, The Arctic vector of Russia's geopolitical renaissance, Managing marine resources and developing commercial fishing, Modernising the production and transportation of Arctic energy resources, and Modern trends and the specifics of socioeconomic development on the Arctic coast.
