Russian troop numbers on Novaya Zemlya to double by 2020

The number of Russian troops deployed at the Central Test Site of the Russian Armed Forces on Novaya Zemlya Islands in the Arctic will double by 2020, Rossiya Segodnya has reported, quoting a source in the Defense Ministry.

"Today, Russia is increasing its number of Arctic troops deployed at the country's Central Test Site (on Novaya Zemlya Islands) and arming them with the most advanced weapons," the source said. "We plan to double our troop numbers at the test site by 2020."   

According to the source, there are plans to deploy an anti-aircraft missile regiment and the airfield is being renovated for transport and combat aircraft purposes.
