Remote sensing system set up in Murmansk Region

The Emergencies Ministry and Roskosmos (Federal Space Agency) jointly introduced an Earth remote sensing system in the Murmansk Region, the ministry's head, Vladimir Puchkov, told RIA Novosti.

"The Murmansk Region has become the first Arctic region where such a system was set up," Puchkov said.

The system will allow the ministry to receive real-time data from space on fire and flood threats, with an on-site resolution of no less than 0.7 m. The ministry will be able monitor and prevent emergencies and eliminate their consequences more effectively using this data.

Puchkov said the ministry is actively developing the space monitoring system in cooperation with foreign partners: Italy, Switzerland, France, Canada, the United States and China.

Similar Earth remote sensing systems will soon be introduced in other Arctic places — Dudinka and Anadyr.
