Russia to build nuclear super-icebreaker

Russian engineers have started designing a nuclear powered super-icebreaker to provide year-round service through the Arctic, Minister of Industry and Trade Denis Manturov said, as quoted by RIA Novosti.

"The design process for a unique icebreaker, with a powerful 110 MW power unit to provide year-round navigation through the Northern Sea Route, has begun," the Minister said.

The ship will be named Lider. It will ensure year-round operation in the Arctic both on the Northern Sea Route and the high latitude lane.
