United Shipbuilding Corporation to launch new flagship nuclear-powered icebreaker construction in 2019

Construction of the flagship nuclear-powered icebreaker is scheduled to begin in 2019, RIA Novosti cites spokesperson for the United Shipbuilding Corporation Vitaly Gorbik as saying at a meeting of the Committee for Shipbuilding Industry and Marine Equipment of the Russian Engineering Union.

Russia's new nuclear super-icebreaker will not be limited to the Northern Sea Route and will ensure year-round navigation everywhere at higher Arctic latitudes. It will be able to escort ships with a deadweight of 200,000 metric tons within a period of no more than eight days.
