Børge Brende: The Arctic must remain a safe, peaceful region

International cooperation remains effective in the Arctic, which has been a peaceful oasis in a conflict-torn world, Norwegian Foreign Minister Borge Brende told an international conference in Tromso, Norway.

Mr Brende pointed out that the primary objective of all countries with territories in the Arctic should be to develop the Arctic, preserving its environment. "We must stick together to ensure peaceful development and cooperation. The Arctic must remain a safe, peaceful region with respect for international law, sustainable development and balance between industrial development and environmental preservation," he said as quoted by RIA Novosti.

The minister praised the Arctic Council for the role it plays in the region's development. "Over these years, the council has proved its ability to adapt to ongoing changes. Twenty years ago, our main objective was to facilitate environmental protection. At present, we are to resolve a broader range of environmental protection issues," he added.
