The Alley of Polar Heroes

The Alley of Polar Heroes opens in a Moscow Region museum

The names of Arctic and Antarctic explorers will be remembered in the Gorki Leninskiye museum and nature reserve outside Moscow. The ceremony to open the Alley of Polar Heroes took place on May 30 and was attended by Russian Polar explorers, including Hero of the USSR and Russia Artur Chilingarov.

“The Gorki Leninskiye museum is preserving the history of our country which can’t be imagined without polar expedition explorers, pilots, sailors, helicopter pilots and divers. We are very grateful for this alley,” said Artur Chilingarov, first vice-president of the Russian Geographical Society, and Arctic and Antarctic explorer.

The alley features information stands dedicated to ten Polar expedition heroes: Artur Chilingarov, Yury Senkevich, Anatoly Sagalevich, Boris Lyalin, Valery Chkalov, Alexei Tryoshnikov, Ivan Papanin, Otto Schmidt, Ilya Mazuruk and Anatoly Lyapidevsky.

The museum’s director, Igor Konyshev, said the alley would be expanded in the future.

After the opening ceremony, the famous Polar explorer planted lilac bushes.
