Russian Arctic military deliveries soar threefold

In 2019, ships of Russian Oboronlogistika company sailed 11 times to various Arctic destinations and the Novaya Zemlya Archipelago, and delivered about 30,000 metric tons of military equipment and cargo from the Defense Ministry's Military Construction Sector, according to the Defense Ministry's Department of Information and Mass Media.

Last year, 11,000 metric tons of military consignments were delivered to the Arctic on orders from the Defense Ministry.

"Various goods, including construction materials, weapons and military equipment, were delivered to the region. Additionally, equipment for a newly-completed municipal secondary school was delivered to the town of Belushya Guba on Novaya Zemlya," Defense Ministry sources noted.

According to the Defense Ministry, Murmansk, Arkhangelsk, Vladivostok, Vanino and Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky handle most of the Arctic shipments. Roadstead [harbor]-based ships were used to unload freight onto the unimproved shorelines of the Arctic islands.
