Chukotka to host sea-hunter festival July 18-19

The 21st sea hunter culture and sport festival, Beringia, will be held in Chukotka on July 18-19, Arktika-info reported.

Some 120 contestants from 16 local teams (from the villages of Lavrenty, Lorino, Inchoun and Welen of the Chukotka District and Novoye Chaplino of the Providensky District) will participate in competitions that will take place in the village of Lorino in the Chukotka Autonomous Area.

On Day 1, a Chukchi and Eskimo canoe team race will be held. On Day 2, everyone will be able to compete in the canoe singles.

The festival will feature performances by Chukchi artistic groups and folk companies, an exhibition/fair of folk crafts, discos, competitions and national cuisine tastings.

The festival is organized by the Sport and Tourism Committee of the Chukotka Autonomous Area and the Administration of the Chukotka District. Competitions are held to preserve traditional and ethnic sports and local sea hunter culture. The first Beringia race took place in 1992.
