Yamal District to publish unique folklore books

Members of a research expedition have collected valuable folklore material in the town of Syunai-Sale, the villages of Yar-Sale, Panayevsk, Salemal and Andropovsky Sor, as well as the vicinity of Lake Yer-Khadyta-Nyav, in the Yamal District of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Area and are preparing to publish a book on the subject, according to the district administration's website.

Researchers have collected folklore genre material, including Syudbabts epic sagas about wars and giants, Yarabts songs bemoaning the difficult life and sufferings of various heroes, Khynabts lyrical songs, those about everyday life and comic songs. Other local folklore works include Lakhananko fairy tales, old legends and rites, Khobtsoko riddles, Mer Khetybada Vada tongue-twisters, as well as various omens and signs linked to hunting, fishing, reindeer breeding and Mother Nature.

Expedition members included Leniza Kaminova, an expert on folklore from the Center of Ethnic Cultures, Senior Research Associate Nailya Galeyeva from the Archaeology and Ethnography Sector of the Shemanovsky Museum-Exhibition Facility, as well as folklore experts Yabtane Nyarui and Ulyana Serotetto from the Center of Ethnic Cultures in the village of Yar-Sale.
