Kara-Winter 2015 expedition comes to an end

The Yamal nuclear-powered icebreaker is returning from the Kara-Winter 2015 expedition, the Arktika-Info news agency reports. The expedition, organized by Rosneft company with the input of specialists at the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute, covered virtually the entire Russian Arctic coast — from the Barents Sea to the Eastern Siberian Sea.

Rosneft is conducting large-scale exploration in the Arctic for the subsequent development of shelf deposits. Under the project, scientists explore glaciers on the Novaya Zemlya, Severnaya Zemlya and Franz Josef Land archipelagoes and the Novosibirsk Islands (New Siberian Islands), study the physical and mechanical properties of the ice and the morphometric parameters of smooth and hummock ice.
