Natural Resources Ministry: Russia able to apply to the UN for extending the Arctic shelf this summer

This summer, Russia will be able to apply to the UN commission for an extension of the outer boundaries of its continental shelf in the Arctic, Denis Khramov, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, told RIA Novosti.

"We plan to apply in the near future. This may happen this summer if the government takes the relevant decision. We believe that this is an advisable thing to do," Khramov said.

According to the Emergencies Ministry, the total value of minerals concentrated in the Arctic region of Russia exceeds $30 trillion.

In addition to Russia, Denmark, the United States, Canada and Norway also have arctic sectors.
