Russian ship to conduct oceanographic research of the Northern Sea Route

The hydrographic/oceanographic ship Vice Admiral Vorontsov of the Russian Pacific Fleet will conduct oceanographic research in the country's northern seas, the Arktika-Info agency reported, citing Captain 1st Rank Roman Martov, a spokesman for the Eastern Military District. The expedition set out on July 15 from the port of Vladivostok.

The goal of the expedition is to refine current navigational charts and to check available navigation equipment in the interests of expanded shipping in northern latitudes, including the Northern Sea Route, Martov noted.

The 2014 expedition sailed aboard the hydrographic/oceanographic ship Admiral Vladimirsky of the Baltic Fleet and proved that it was possible to navigate the Northern Sea Route without icebreakers. Experts compiled numerous materials for updating navigational charts and ship crews' manuals.
