Britain’s Arctic Convoy veterans to visit Crimea on Oct. 6-9

British sailors, Arctic Convoy veterans, will visit Crimea on Oct. 6-9. The event was organized with the participation of the Russian Convoy club.

Yevgeny Kasevin, the visit organizer and an honorary club member, said the idea arose when the veterans visited St. Petersburg during the celebrations marking the Victory's anniversary.

"I told them: ‘Dear friends, you have been to the northern cradle of the Russian Navy, how do you like the idea of visiting the southern cradle?' I was referring to Sevastopol," Kasevin said during a news conference at Rossiya Segodnya.

He said the event will attract attention of many people in Russia and abroad.

"I have never been to Crimea and I look forward to seeing the locations where fighting took place — the bay where the light brigade attack took place," Russian Convoy Chairman, Arctic Convoy veteran Ernest Davis said.

The meeting's moderator noted that two veterans refused to attend the meeting upon the British authorities' recommendations.

"I personally did not receive any letter to this effect. I think this is a political issue. I want to see and meet people, not governments," Davis said.

"Russia honors and remembers the feat of Great Patriotic War heroes," Deputy Governor of Sevastopol Alexander Reshetnikov said.

He spoke about the visit program.

On Oct. 7, the sailors will lay flowers at the memorial commemorating the heroic defense of Sevastopol and visit the Black Sea Fleet Museum and 35th Coastal Battery museum complex. They will also meet with Russian veterans.

The next day, they will be taken to the Siege of Sevastopol (1854-55) panorama museum. They will also visit naval vessels and the British cemetery.

On Oct. 9, they will visit Balaklava and enjoy wine-tasting.
