Russian military to monitor Arctic coast with radar system

The Russian military will use the Podsolnukh (Sunflower) radar system to monitor the Arctic coastline, RTI General Director Sergei Boyev said.

“Posolnukhs will address issues related to our Arctic coastline,” he said.

The Long-Range Communications Research Institute (NPK NIIDAR), a subsidiary of RTI, designed the all-weather, shortwave and short-range radar system. The system provides continuous, round-the-clock monitoring of surface and air targets within 450 kilometers, and is capable of detecting targets at varying heights in the line of sight, and beyond the horizon.

RTI plans to develop a special version of the Podsolnukh radar system for Arctic deployment that will be adapted to function in northern conditions.
