Chukotka Yukaghirs included in the list of Russia’s indigenous peoples
The Yukaghirs living in the Chukotka Autonomous Area have been included in the Single List of Russia's Indigenous Minorities. The appropriate amendments to the Government Resolution were approved by Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, the Government's press service reported.
Previously, the Russian Federation's regions inhabited by the Yukaghirs included only the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) and the Magadan Region.
There are currently 198 Yukaghirs living and working in Chukotka. The amendments will give the Yukaghirs the right to preserve and develop their indigenous culture and language and to protect their traditional lifestyle, livelihoods and crafts in the territory of Chukotka.
