Chukotka to host meeting of reindeer herders and Erak-Or 2017 Fair

From March 3 to 5, 2017, a meeting of reindeer herders and the Erak-Or 2017 Fair will be held in the village of Amguema in the Egvekinot City District of the Chukotka Autonomous Area, a statement on Chukotka's official website reads. The meeting will focus on current issues facing reindeer herding in the region.

The meeting will be attended by reindeer herders; heads and experts of agricultural enterprises, the department of industrial and agricultural policy, and the directorate for the affairs of indigenous minorities of Chukotka; representatives of the Union of Chukotka Reindeer Herders and the Association of Chukotka Indigenous Minorities.

The fair will include reindeer races, performances by folk ensembles and Chukchi rites based on ancient traditions. Participants and guests will be able to visit a yaranga, a tent-like house for nomads, and taste local dishes.

The event will be organized by the department of industrial and agricultural policy of the Chukotka Autonomous Area, the administrations of municipal districts, the Association of Chukotka Indigenous Minorities, the Union of Chukotka Reindeer Herders and the Kupol (Dome) Social Development Foundation.
