Second permafrost observation station under construction on Yamal

The second permafrost observation station is under construction in the Cis-Ural region in the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Area. A 25-meter well was drilled for a special metering device that will transmit data to a server of the Russian Federal Service for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring (Rosgidromet).

“We plan to conduct long-term monitoring of the permafrost temperatures in a thermometric well of at least 25 meters deep. We will also monitor the dynamic of the seasonal thaw depths by taking annual measurements according to seasonal thaw cycles,” said Artyom Sinitsky, lead research fellow of the Department of Geophysical Engineering at the Arctic Research Center.

The station is a project of the Arctic Research Center. A similar permafrost monitoring station is located in Salekhard.
