Northern Sea Route administration suggests establishing regional navigation management center

The Northern Sea Route administration has proposed the creation of a navigation management center for the Route, according to the administration's acting chief Nikolai Monko.

"There are plans to establish an inter-agency center to support safe navigation along the Northern Sea Route," he said.

According to Monko, the center should include representatives of icebreaker fleet operators, experts on navigational-geographical support, representatives of services providing this support, captains of the Northern Sea Route's ports, representatives of search-and-rescue services, a research and operational team from the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute, representatives of pilots' organizations and the main consignors.

"The main task of the center should be the control of navigation along the Northern Sea Route <… > However, it should be noted that it would only be appropriate to set up this agency after the approval of the bill on the Northern Sea Route's operator," the source said.

State Duma deputies have already passed the first version of this bill.
