A day at the Murmansk Commercial Seaport

  • The Murmansk Commercial Seaport has 14 berths serving about 300 ships a year
  • Loaded trains enter the port by rail. The cranes can load up to 80 tons in a ship
  • A dust and wind screen 20 meters high and 1.8 kilometers long is being constructed to reduce the velocity of the wind that comes from the sea and carries dust into the city
  • The project is currently 60 percent complete; the screen is to be completed in March 2020. The screen is painted in bright colors, which, according to the design concept, symbolizes the Polar Lights
  • The port area has 14 full-size and three compact mist and snow cannons
  • The cannons disperse water mixed with chemicals over the coal to form a coating to prevent dust. In subzero temperatures the cannons cover coal piles with snow
  • The port has an environmental control center whose personnel monitor the load handling and the environment around the clock and with an unfavorable forecast can suspend various operations
  • The Vitus Bering dry bulk carrier, built in China, is loaded with coal to be shipped to Amsterdam for the first time
  • Daylight only lasts a few hours in Murmansk during the polar night
