Days of Nenets Written Culture underway in the Nenets Autonomous Area

The Days of Nenets Written Culture are underway in Naryan-Mar, the Nenets Autonomous Area's regional government website reports. The program includes 170 different events. The event, which began back in 2002, seeks to preserve the local indigenous people's language and culture.

Different events that will take place throughout the region include a competition in recitation, competitions in local sports, film screenings, stage performances of fairy tales and book exhibitions.

"The ethnic issue is one of the biggest priorities here," said Governor Igor Koshin. "We live in a region with its own indigenous ethnic population, after all, and we pay close attention to preserving the Nenets people's traditions and culture. This is reflected in the Nenets language textbook published last year, the nomadic kindergarten that started work in the Kaninskaya tundra area this summer and the Association of Northern Indigenous Peoples' first congress, which took place at the start of the year," Koshin said.

The Days of Nenets Written Culture will run through to December 9 and will conclude with a round table discussion preserving the Nenets language in the region.
