Yakutia preparing for International Traditional Reindeer Breeding Championship

In March, the International Traditional Reindeer Breeding Championship will be held in the Neryungri District of Yakutia. The organizers have sent out invitations to 20 reindeer-breeding regions of Russia, and China, and Mongolia will also take part in the championship.

Gornyak Stadium in Neryungri will host competitions in the following categories: Reindeer Breeder, Hostess of the Chum, and Operation and Maintenance of Off-Road Motor Vehicles.

However, the most spectacular and main event of the competition will be reindeer sleigh races and deer catching competitions, to be held on the Iyengra River.

In addition, there will be a double-event among women and men, which will include jumping over sleds and a northern triple jump, as well as tossing a lasso on a khorei (long stick used to drive a team of reindeer) and a combined relay race.

The program will also include a conference on current issues of reindeer breeding, in particular, the industry development strategy, training, and measures to support nomadic reindeer herders.
