Tourism and reindeer herding are two of the principal development courses on Vaygach Island in the Barents Sea, Igor Koshin, Governor of the Nenets Autonomous Area, told TASS, at the Terra Scientia on Klyazma River Russian Educational Youth Forum.

"Tourism and, maybe, reindeer herding are the development [courses] there. This is such a unique place, severe Northern nature and many different animals. It [tourism] should not be large-scale, because the Northern nature is very fragile. It is educational tourism," Mr Koshin said.

At the moment tourists are reaching the island by boat. During the winter months it is possible to get there using snowmobiles.
