Yamal muskoxen to be brought to Yakutia in 2017

There are plans to bring a number of muskoxen from the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Area to Yakutia between August-September 2017. Yakov Sivtsev, Head of the Biological Resources Directorate of the Natural Resources Ministry of Yakutia, said at a meeting of the organizing committee for the holding of activities of the Year of the Environment and the Year of Specially Protected Natural Areas in Russia.

Muskoxen are to be released on the Chekanovsky Ridge (Bulunsky District), where groups of Anabar and Bulun muskoxen mix.

"The delivery of muskoxen from the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Area will have a beneficial effect on the genetic heterogeneity of muskoxen and, consequently, on the elimination of possible undesirable inbred problems," Sivtsev said.

Currently, a roadmap has been developed for catching and storing muskoxen in the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Area, their transportation and resettlement in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), agreed upon by the Department of Natural Resources Regulation, Forest Relations and Oil and Gas Industry Development of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Area and the Natural Resources Ministry of Yakutia and approved by Zapsibgazprom.
