Rosatomflot to build fifth and sixth Project 22220 icebreakers

Atomflot, Russia’s nuclear icebreaker fleet operator, and the Baltic Shipyard have signed a contract for building the fifth and sixth Project 22220 serial icebreakers. The contract will be financed on a parity basis using federal budget funding and Rosatom assets.

Under the contract, the fifth serial icebreaker is to enter service in December 2028, followed by the sixth one in December 2030.

“Continued construction of a series of unique multirole nuclear-powered icebreakers is a key element of the Russian Arctic’s comprehensive development. Despite external factors, we are implementing a plan to expand freight traffic volumes via the Northern Sea Route. Modern nuclear-powered icebreakers are the main factor of successful Arctic projects. Russia is the only country that can safely escort vessels in high latitudes, while maintaining commercial speeds,” Acting Atomflot General Director Leonid Irlitsa noted.
