United States releases its national Arctic strategy

The White House presented its new strategy to enhance US presence in the Arctic for the next decade, with a focus on geopolitical issues and climate change. This is the first US national policy document on the Arctic since 2013.

US government officials said the strategy takes into account the increasing strategic competition in the Arctic with Russia and China over the past decade.

They added that the strategy should position the United States to effectively compete and manage tensions.

Administration officials mentioned the US decision to start building three new icebreakers in addition to the two that are currently in use.
