A monument ‘To the Heroes of the Russian Arctic' will be installed in Salekhard to keep the memory of the explorers of the Extreme North and participants in military operations near the Yamal coast during the 1941-1945 Great Patriotic War, Arctic-info reports.

The monument will feature figures of a polar pilot, explorer and a captain and will be decorated with bas-reliefs depicting historical discoveries and military tragedies in the Arctic.

The site of the new monument will be decided upon by residents of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Area via an online vote. They will choose from the river port of Salekhard, a public garden by the Wedding Registry Office, the residential area of the Respubliki, Zoi Kosmodemyanskoi, Komsomolskaya streets and Maly Proyezd, or a car-testing track area on Salekhard-Aksarka Road.
