Ice hotel to be built on Kamchatka

A snow and ice hotel will be built near the Vilyuchinsky Volcano on the Kamchatka Peninsula, 20 km away from the township of Termalny in the Yelizovsky District. This will be Kamchatka's first igloo hotel. The project's organizers have received more than 140 applications from those willing to help build the hotel, which is scheduled to begin in February, Eduard Makhayev, the construction company spokesman, told the TASS news agency.

"Over 140 people from various Russian regions have volunteered to participate in the project. We even have applications from the Baltic countries and Norway. Most of the applicants are professionals specializing in photography or wood or ice sculpture," Makhayev said.

No more than four volunteers will be invited: a photographer, a videographer, a cook and a sculptor. In addition to helping build a town of several igloos, they'll also provide other services, depending on their specialization.

Each igloo will have sleeping accommodations. A night in an igloo will cost a minimum of 6,000 rubles. The opening ceremony is scheduled to March 1, 2016. The hotel will function until last days of April.

The ice structures will be adorned with bas-reliefs depicting characters from Kamchatka myths and legends.

The world's first ice hotel appeared in Norway in 1991. Today, similar services are also available in Finland, Sweden, Romania, Canada and Alaska.
