Russian Deputy Defense Minister discusses Arctic freight transport

The logistics support divisions of Russian military districts and fleets have delivered 20 percent of the materiel requisitioned for military units in the Arctic regions, Siberia and the Far East under 2016 plans, Deputy Defense Minister Army General Dmitry Bulgakov told RIA Novosti.

"Over 100,000 metric tons of materiel will be delivered to 150 far-away locations in Siberia and the Extreme North, including lighthouses, islands and other military bases where over 20,000 servicemen and their families live, as well as to civilian personnel fulfilling various objectives at Defense Ministry facilities," Mr Bulgakov said

Military units and garrisons in the Extreme North, Siberia and the Russian Far East will receive all the food, clothing, medical supplies, and liquid and solid-state fuel they will need through late September, he noted.

Vendors deliver about 69 percent of all materiel, with transport agency ships delivering an additional 26 percent The auxiliary fleet, including mooring lighters, sea-going tugs, roadstead tugs and others, as well as military-transport aircraft, vehicles and trains, will deliver the rest.

"Northern freight deliveries are planned in such a way as to ship freight to the remotest and most uninviting areas during the navigation season with favorable weather conditions," he explained.

We are currently delivering over 190,000 metric tons of building, structural and bulk materials, including tarmac, cement, metals, plus pipes and fittings, as well as equipment and vital infrastructure components to the Defense Ministry's Arctic construction sites on Alexandra Land, Kotelny, Wrangel and Sredny islands, Cape Schmidt, in Rogachyovo and Tiksi, he added.

"We are using a complicated logistics system to build Arctic facilities, and we have to deliver everything from the mainland," he said.
