Volunteers to clean Bely Island in Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Area

A unit of 20 volunteers started cleaning Bely Island in the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Area.

The governor's press service in the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Area reports: "The volunteers have come from Moscow, Samara, Sevastopol, and the Sverdlovsk, Tyumen and Kurgan regions as well as the Khanty-Mansiysk and Yamal-Nenets autonomous areas. The team is international like in previous years — we have one person from Israel here."

Before this expedition the volunteers took part in six-day sports tour of the Polar Urals. "They conquered the summit of Mount Rai-Iz and rafted down the Sob River. They also listened to lectures on safe travel and survival in extreme conditions. During these training sessions volunteers from different cities learned to work as a team and effectively reach their common goals," the report reads.

Now they will be cleaning the area around the Popov hydro meteorological station and a former military unit. In addition, they will remove over 400 metric tons of scrap metal from the island.
